Dog Attack Fatal for Postal Carrier

A Rottweiler attack on a County mail carrier has resulted in the mail carrier's death, the San Diego Union Tribune reports today. Postal employee Hao Yun "Eddie" Lin was working overtime on a route in Oceanside when he was attacked by the dog on May 25. He suffered a head wound which proved fatal when he died on June 4. Authorities say that the dog was inside a house when Lin was on his rounds, and apparently was able to push a door open to chase Lin. The dog chased Lin down the block, where Lin fell and struck his head. It is not reported whether the dog bit the mail carrier. The dog was later euthanized. An investigation is pending to determine if criminal charges will be filed against the dog owners.

Ironically, the attack occurred just at National Dog Bite Preventionweek was ending.

A word of caution for all dog owners-If your dog bites, the owner will be subject to civil damages. California imposes "strict liability" with respect to dog bites. There is no "one free bite."
