I am an occasional road cyclist and triathlete. Stories like this scare the heck out of me. A 44 year old bicyclist was killed on Friday when a privately owned street sweeper swerved into a bike lane on Genesee Ave. and struck him. Police have indicated that the cyclist, Suntat Peverley of Mira Mesa, died of skull fractures and massive brain injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time he was struck.
The crash occurred on Friday afternoon. Peverley was riding south on Genesee in the bike lane. The privately owned street sweeper was being driven by Fred Fuller, 77, of La Mesa. Fuller swerved into the bike lane after apparently falling asleep. The preliminary investigation confirms that Fuller was apparently at fault. No charges have yet been filed. Fuller reportedly cleans parking lots at night, and took naps between jobs. He reportedly told police he had been sleeping poorly recently due to recent deaths in his family.
A very scary story. My heart goes out to the family of the deceased.
