The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a press release earlier this month warning about the dangers of drop side cribs. The U.S.C.P.S.C attributed at least thirty two infant accidental deaths to hazards associated with these types of cribs. A drop side crib is the type of crib where one side of the crib can be lowered when a latch is released. The Consumer Product Safety Commissionhas announced eleven recalls involving over seven million drop side cribs due to suffocation and strangulation dangers. These recalls involve several manufacturers of drop side cribs. The Commission determined that drop side cribs have a tendency to be less structurally sound than cribs with four fixed sides. A problem cited by the commission involves a situation when the crib side partially drops. If an infant rolls or moves into the space created by a partially detached drop side, the child can become entrapped or wedged into an area between the crib and the mattress, which can lead to suffocation. Please be aware of this hazard and immediately take steps to replace any drop side cribs that you may be using.
