A bicyclist was struck by a trolley Tuesday afternoon, and was seriously injured. The accident occured at Severin Drive at about 5:20 p.m. The male bicyclist was travelling north on Severin Drive in La Mesa, approaching Amaya Drive. The crossing arms came down to stop traffic for a westbound trolley. The bicyclist went around the crossing guard arms and veered into the southbound lanes, apparently in an effort to “beat the approaching trolley” according to La Mesa Police officer Carlos Medero. The bicycle hit the side of the trolley. The rider was thrown to the ground near the tracks. He was taken to an area hospital by ambulance. He was reportedly unconscious and had suffered several broken bones.
