What is “Med Pay” and What does it cover?

On Behalf of | Nov 21, 2013 | Firm News

Two common question about Automobile Insurance Policies in California are: ” What is Med Pay?” and “What does Med Pay cover?” These questions ofter arise after an auto accident.

Med Pay is a provision in an automobile insurance policy whereby the Insurance Company will pay for medical expenses incurred in an accident irrespective of fault. A typical auto policy has a $5,000 or $10,000 limit for Med Pay coverage. If you are in an accident and have Med Pay coverage, your own insurance company will cover costs for medical treatment directly related to the accident. Med Pay coverage typically does not cover expenses related to future medical care or treatment. The coverage provided is only for “reasonable and necessary” treatment, as determined by the carrier.

If you are in an accident, whether or not it is your fault, you may be able to make a claim against your own insurance policy for Med Pay if you have medical expenses.
